Nikolay Denchev is originally from Chirpan, Bulgaria. He began studying art seriously in the eighth grade at Dechko Uzoonov Art High School in Kanzanluk, Bulgaria. A relative newcomer to the United States, Nikolay moved to Louisville, Kentucky, in August 2003. He has exhibited work in Bulgaria, Louisville and Bloomington, Indiana. He had his first solo exhibit in the U.S. at Spalding University’s Huff Gallery in the fall of 2004 and he participated in the Louisville Visual Arts Association’s 95th Annual Water Tower Show in 2005.
Also in 2005, he was selected to participate in Gallopalooza by designing and painting a 15” model horse that was auctioned to benefit Brightside. Four of his 2D pieces were chosen by My Morning Jacket to be included with their fourth album Z.
During 2008, Nikolay's Composition I was used as album cover art for Amherst's The Detail.
During his career, Nikolay has had four independent art exhibits and has participated in 14 group exhibits in galleries in Chirpan and Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, and in Louisville, Kentucky, and Bloomington, Indiana.
His compositions depict simple human emotions, including the fight between good and evil, love and hate, and pain and pleasure. He mainly works with ink, watercolors and pastels on paper. His detailed works express his deepest fears and the sources of his happiness.
Nikolay currently lives and paints in Louisville, Kentucky.
